The Odyssey - Final project
FinalDraft

In the famous story of “The Odyssey”, originally told by Homer, moral Greek values are often said throughout the story. Values such as Loyalty, Respect, cunning wit. Were very cultural norms. These values were shown in several chapters. Today we face our world’s situations, which support and relate to the same values. Homer’s story still has relevance in today’s modern world.

Loyalty- The story of Calypso, when Odysseus chooses to go home instead of the promise of beautiful women and immortal. He shows Loyalty to his wife by turning down the hottest chick in the world for his love.

Respect your guests and Gods – When Polyphemus starts trying to eat his guests, Odysseus blinds him. The Men eat the Sun god’s cattle, so the god kills them afterwards. Alcinous is kind and generous to Odysseus through out his stay.

Cunning wit – Odysseus does not allow Polyphemus to be killed because he is the only one who can move the rock in front of the door instead he tells polyphemus that his name is “nobody” so when Odysseus and his men are able to escape.

The Odyssey

In the story The Odyssey talks about the ruler of Ithaca named Odysseus. In this story

Odysseus follows the rules of the ancestors where they have values. Some of their values

are respect, loyalty, and trust. To have these values you must follow it. Through

Odysseus’s time he went through so much because he left his newborn son and wife to go

to war for his country. Through the times that he tried to come home he couldn’t.

Through his journey trying to come back home came values. In these values Odysseus

followed it through all the time and wanted people to use it too.

One of the values is Respect. Either to gain respect from others you must show respect to

them. In the story with "Cyclops/Polyphemus" he did not show Odysseus and his men some

respect. He tried to eat them. In a good way to show respect to somebody is in the story

with "King Alcinous" when Odysseus was at his land they gave Odysseus and his men all

their respect by being nice and offering stuff to them, also making them fell like it is their home

too. This is the value that Odysseus follows and shows to other people. This value was very

important to some people those days because it was respectful and not rude. Also you don’t want

to ebarrass yourself in front of others, so if you want respect you must show respect.

The other value of the story was Trust. If you have trust then that means other people can

rely on you. Like Odysseus the men trusted him because he was going to bring them back

home. Also to listen to whom is right before something wrong happens to you, and to do

what is right. To gain trust you must have loyalty and respect and you must show and tell

your people so they may trust you. Like in the story the men followed Odysseus because

he was the leader and they trusted him.

Another value is loyalty. To be loyal you have to be a good person and do good stuff.

To be loyal you must show respect to one another and to have trust. Also being loyal is to not

doing bad things and picking wrong things up.Like Penelope while Odysseus left through all that

time she never slept with another because she was being loyal to Odysseus.

In this story it described some values like Respect, Loyalty, and Trust, it could be shown

in other kinds of different books part of the world these days. Today we can find and

notice these kinds of values in people. These values influences people to know how to

treat others and things. The influences of Greek culture on modern places/people have values in

them.

THE ODYSSEY

In the story “The Odyssey” we talk about a man who was a king in Ithaca, who

goes by the name Odysseus. It talks about the hardships he had to give up and go

through during his journey from the Trojan war all the way back to Ithaca. Not

only did he make it back safely, but he had gone through all the trials and

tribulations of the many places he had passed through. (and believe me it was not

easy!). Today our world also faces similar situations of the same values and

beliefs the Greeks had way back then. So let me give you a little example of three

values that our generation now and the generation way back then have and still

believe in, but in different ways.

The first value that was and still is will have to be RESPECT. About 3,000 years

ago many people of that time believed to have respect when meeting new guests.

You were to welcome your guests with all you have by giving them a place to

stay, food to eat, and a warm place to stay in. There was one thing that was

forbidden to ever do when welcoming a guest and that was Never to ask your

guest for their name! This is an example of what happened in one part of the

Odyssey, when Odysseus and his men welcomed their selves into the cave of

Cyclops. They ate, slept, and did anything they wanted, because your guests and

what else were they suppose to do? Just then Cyclops came in angry that they came and ate all his food,

he had lost it and he threw a temper and out came the words,

"what is your name?" (There you go), he had just broken one of the rules and that was having

Respect to your guests when welcoming them. He later ended up getting punished

not from the gods, but from Odysseus, dagging the knife into his eye!

The next value will be SACRIFICE. During the Greek ages, when wanting to

receive help or trust from the gods you were to sacrifice your best animal. Many

people today don’t do that, because sacrificing something to your god won’t

usually work because they wont just come down and swoop it out of our hands

right? But when we do need help we can always turn to god and pray. This leads

me into a chapter were Odysseus had to give up one of his best animals to

Teresias to learn what his destiny will be. Sacrificing something will make the

gods happy and you usually end up with the things you’ve wanted, but sometimes you

wont get what you've asked for because you’ve done something they seem to not like! But now,

we don’t go through things like that, but we do have times when we have to give

up things in order to do what we are suppose to do. (Right?)

The last value I’m going to talk about is being OBEDIENT. This has to do with

most of us today and way back then. When you are told to do something you are

supposed to do it right? This also has to do with one part in the Odyssey, when

Odysseus had to sacrifice an animal in the land of the dead to Terisias so that he

can learn his destiny. This is an example of being willing to obey. Another

example will be if your parents want you to do something, you listen, but then

you go out of their wishes that’s being untruthful! So the ways before and today

are still the same. Being obedient to your parents is a thing you have to do, but

then it’s what we always end up breaking!

The Odyssey is a myth which reveals many of the Greek values. Such as Respect,

Sacrifice, and Obedience are shown in parts of the story. Today we can see those

same values in everyone but just in a way different way then it was back then.

The influence of the Greek culture on modern civilization has to mainly do with

the same beliefs, but way back many years ago many of the things they did were

more realistic than it is compared to ours.

The odyssey

In the classical story of Odysseus as told by Homer our hero is called to face very hard obstacles and fight. He must win with the help of Circe. In the Trojan War, our worrier Odysseus is transformed into an old man and creates war to win the kingdom. Odysseus fought in the Trojan War and won. He did all this to protect the kingdom.

The separation was to decide ether to loose his son telemaches or fight in the Trojan War and protect his Kingdom. Odysseus mom told him to go to troy. She was not the only one that told him though. Agamemnon and Analogous did as well. He was confused but he finally decided to go to war and leave his family.

The Initiation was the long Journey home. He had to go through Circe, Calypso and Cyclops and it was a really long journey. In this journey Odysseus took a long time to get out and stayed in this islands. Odysseys mentors were Athena, Delis and tieresias. Finally in the Transformation Odysseus is going home.

In the return only the dog and an old man recognized him. He had to disguise him self. Odysseus kills the suitor and reclaims his kingdom. He finally gets his kingdom. It takes him 20 years to get back home. His wife was also looking for some to replays Odysseus.

Homers sort demonstrates a true hero’s journey. Odysseus is called to war. During his journey he overcomes challage with help from Athena and others. Odysseus proves himself to be a classical warrior. Odysseus completes his journey and gets his kingdom.

The Odysseus Final Project Essay

The introduction of the hero’s journey is talking about the war, Odysseus, and to help Odysseus. Odysseus is the king of Ithaca. He goes to troy and goes to war. Then later when he returns he comes unknown. His wife doesn’t know.

Odysseus comes home from the war with Troy. He comes to his wife Penelope. She doesn’t know who is this strange man walking up to her. Odysseus kept on saying it’s me Odysseus. Penelope didn’t believe him so she gave him the questions to answer.

Odysseus wife had a baby after Odysseus left. Penelope named the baby Telemachus. When Odysseus returned he didn’t know that he had a son. When he left he didn’t even know that Penelope was pregnant. When Odysseus returned Telemachus was 20 years old.

Odysseus had left for 20 years. His wife didn’t know who he was. He son knew who he was. He knew who his dad was. Even though he was gone for about 20 years. He missed a lot when he was gone. He missed the birth of his son.

He had to take over his kingdom again when he returned. The suitors tried to take over. When he got home he had killed all of the suitors.

The first value is sacrifice. Odyseus had to sacrifice his family and wife. he had to go

Odysseus prove himself to be an epic warrior/a mythological hero/an archetypal hero

(warrior)/a classic hero (warrior) that we talk about for many years

Daisy Simental. The Odyssey

Odysseus had to sacrifce his family and risk his life to save Troy and to keep his people safe. He went to war to protect his kingdom because he was not ready and wil never be ready tog ive up without a fight. He did it to keep Troy and all who lived there in one piece. (sacrifice)
He trusted his men witht he bag of wind athat the goddess had given him for his return to Troy. But The men disobeyed his orders of not opening the bag and their curiosity made them break the trust Odysseus had for them. Which effectd in a huge strom which made them father than ever from their home land and made it more diffcult to get home safe and in time. Friends are a big part of life if you actully pull your walls down and let them in. Trust the people around you that had made an effort to show there are there for you and that they love you in a sense. In war the person next to you, fighting, must be very close to you...almost like a borther for there for they will fight for you and their people with teeth and nail because they care bout you. (Trustworthy)
Odysseus had to leave his wife and kid when he left to war for Troy. And through all the years that past he stayed very loyal to her. Even thought he had the most gorgouse goddess was putting herself out there for him tellin him to stay with her and never return home. But he remained with the thoughts of his presious wife in his head. When you fall for some one and you fall in love with that person they stay on your mind even when sometimes you wish they didn't. Even if someone more beautiful might come along nothing can compare to your first love and the things they did to make you happy. Beauty will come and go as you age and there will always be a girl or guy who looks better than the one you are with. But people fight the temptation toleave the one they love because they have their eyes fully open and see that they only want one person and beauty has nothing to do with it. The people who cheat and play games are in a childish stage in their mind and need to grow up, if they cant see whats right in front of them they why should you stay waiting? 'Cause one you get in that point in your life and mind that you can see through the hair and make up and really look into their eyes and see them for who they are, thats love. And when he retured to his wife, she like him, had stayed faithful to their love. (Love)
Over coming a fear and learing to cope with what you are given and relizing you need to have courge to over come the battle you are faced with. In the land of the dead Odysseus face something very real his own death. He had to see his destiny and knowing he could not change any of it that he saw. He had to over come the fear of death and deal with the fate that life had handed to him. He had to be able to cope with seeing that. And he did. (Fear)
Sometimes you must do things other people who might look into your world might think you are so crazy but in your mind you have a logica reason for it. He had to come home and find out that many of his men he ahd trusted had betrayed him on his time away from home. mMany tired to seduce his wife but his wife stayed faithful to him. But as for the men, he had to take care of them and make an example of showing that that behavior will not be exceptable inhis kingdom. He killed all the men that had betrayed him while he was gone by cutting off their head. He returned home to his wife and his child that he had not seen since he had left to war ten years ago. From that time he had grown very much since his leaving. He came back, and began to rule his kingdom that he had fought for so long for. (Ruthless)

Jessica C.--The Odyssey

In the Odyssey journey, there are three values that are important and they are listen to your leader, courage and trust. Today we face similar situations with listento your leader and trust. This story is very exciting but might have some parts that could make you cry. The worst part is when Odysseus the king of Ithaca goes to fight Troy because the king, his mom and Athena told him to go. He left his new born son with his mother.

The first value that we see in The Odyssey is listen to your leader. When Odysseus went to the god of winds and the god of winds gave Odysseus a bag of winds. When Odysseus got back to the boat he told his men not to touch it or see it but they didn't care of what he said. When they got to Helios cows Odysseus told them not to touch them, but his men touched Helios cows. Some of his men died for not listening to what he told them not to do.

The second value that we see in The Odyssey is courage. When Odysseus went to The Land of The Dead to know his destiny,Odysseus had to scarify sheep's, so he could get to The Land of The Dead. He had to go in there by himself. Odysseus found out that he was going to be the only one alive and get back home to Ithaca. When he got back to the boat he didn't told his men that he was going to be the only one alive.

The third value that we see in The Odyssey is hope.Odysseus was trying to get home by thinking that soon he will see his family. Penelope didn't marry another man because she thinks that Odysseus is still alive. Telemachus goes on a boat to find his father and bring him back home to Ithaca. Odysseus was disguised as a bagger so he could get his kingdom back.

Odysseus king of Ithaca got back home because he wanted to be with his son and Penelope. When Odysseus was disguised as a bagger no body recognize him but the dog. When the dog recognized him the dog died because now he knows that Odysseus his owner was alive. Odysseus had an oppurtunity and he took it he fought all the soothers and none of those guys survived. Odysseus got his kingdom back and everyone was happy to have Odysseus back in Ithaca.
